Nevermind by Nirvana is 20 Years Old

The voice of an entire pissed-off generation, Kurt Cobain, died at the young age of 27 - that's some sort of a mystical age, apparently, since quite a few famous, amazingly talented artists died at that age.

"Nevermind" by Nirvana represented the need of many young people of that time - to listen to a different kind of music, to disengage from the all-too-sweet 80s and to find their own voice. That voice was Nirvana, and specifically - Kurt Cobain.

Through the blurry, unclear, hoarse singing in "Nevermind", Cobain managed to communicate the feeling of a whole generation: we don't belong here, we are lonely and misunderstood, we feel pain but we also don't give much of fuck. It all churned down to one, unforgettable quote:

"Well, whatever, nevermind".

Growing up in the 90s really comes down to this - no one cares, so I won't care either. Nirvana was the voice of those who didn't belong, the outcasts, that didn't fit in and needed someone to express their pain.

The pain was so great, apparently, that Kurt Cobain couldn't really take it. So he took a shotgun to his head, and finished off what could have been a glorious, crazy and painful life.

"Nevermind" is now 20 years old. The album was listed at number 17 on Rolling Stone's list "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", and for many good reasons.

Despite the internet, a plethora of social networks and many other ways to connect to each other, a lot of us still feel very much alone and out of place. "Nevermind" speaks of that pain, and continues to be relevant, expressive and amazingly touching.

Californication Voted Song of the Decade in Israel

Californication, the hit song of Red Hot Chili Peppers, was chosen as "Song of the Decade" in Israel. Californication was chosen from 500 different songs that were popular in the last 10 years. The ranking was held by a popular radio station in Israel, and over 95 thousand people cast their vote and chose the best songs of the passing decade.

Californication received 7,715 votes, which landed it in 1st place. Beautiful by Christina Aguilera reached the 2nd place of the decade's Hit Parade. Evanescence with My Immortal ranked 3rd.



Californication is the seventh studio album by RHCP. The album was released on June 8, 1999 on Warner Bros. Records. Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist.

Californication's subject material incorporated various sexual innuendos commonly associated with the band, and introduced themes of lust, death, contemplations of suicide, and drugs.

Mana Mana (AKA Mahna Mahna, Manamana and Mah Nà Mah Nà), is a funny little music number, written by an Italian musician Piero Umiliani. It originally appeared in the Luigi Scattini's Italian film Sweden: Heaven and Hell, but in the U.K. its most famous version was on the first episode of The Muppet Show.

In 1969, "Mana Mana" was performed on the The Ed Sullivan Show. In the same year, "Mana Mana" was performed on Sesame Street.

Other versions of the song include: a cover by the hard rock band Skin; A cover of the song was performed by Cake and titled "Mahna Mahna" - It was the opening track of the 2002 album For The Kids; An instrumental cover of the song was frequently used as background music in segments of The Benny Hill Show - and many more.

Pink Floyd's Richard Wright has Died

Richard Wright, Pink Floyd founding member and keyboard player, died Monday at the age of 65 after battling cancer. Wright wrote significant parts of the music for classic albums such as Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, as well as for Pink Floyd's final studio album The Division Bell.

In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Syd Barrett, was seen as the group's dominant musical force. The London-born musician and son of a biochemist wrote and sang several songs of his own.

Wright played with the surviving members of Pink Floyd in 2005 at Live 8. Wright had performed on every Pink Floyd tour.

The New Brent Spiner Official Site

After years without a real presence on the web (aside from some fan sites), Brent Spiner's Official Site is online.

All very glittery and shiny (I'm trying to avoid the Flash pun here). Something of a Broadway touch. Anyway, for avid Brent Spiner fans, the main news is that you can listen and pre-order Brent's new CD, which is called Dreamland. Orders are through PayPal only at this stage.

It would have been nice to add "Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back" to the online store of the new site. I know many fans are looking for it, prices on eBay and Amazon are outrageous and it's really hard to come by that CD.

Also, I find it very odd that the "Contact" option in the site isn't really working. I hope it's a mistake and not an intentional thing.

As a huge fan, I am really glad to see Brent's online presence (finally!), and I hope the CD sales go well. Brent is an amazing singer. Obviously, someone there has started thinking "marketing", because a video of Brent's work on Dreamland has appeared on YouTube. Way to go, Brent, and all the best!

So, who wiped RIAA out?

RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has certainly made itself one of the most hated organizations on earth.

I'm guessing this means that a lot of people will be happy to hear that the RIAA site has apparently been wiped out by unknown people, hackers or mysterious entities from outer space.

According to TorrentFreak, it all started when a Reddit user has posted a link to a slow SQL query in RIAA's site. Soon after that, and with the help of Reddit users, apparently, the site has completely vanished (first it lost all of its content and appeared more than half empty, though) and has not returned online until this very moment.

RIAA's tactics have been to sue anything with a heartbeat that ever listened to music they might suspect as pirated. The latest news were that a Judge ordered RIAA to Pay legal fees to falsely fccused lawsuit target - the Second Such Ruling.

Let's hope they DON'T have backups. Too bad their law suits keep coming in.

I love useless sites. The kind you can waste 5 minutes on, and then forget they ever existed. I suspect this will be the fate of this new site - Muxicall.

The object of this site seems to be "make some noise". You enter it, choose a user name and get access to a grid that enables you to play "music". You can choose to play the piano, strings or drums, and then you can randomly click on the buttons and have fun.

The catch is that EVERYBODY gets to do it at the same time. So, there's a lot of noise and mess, and it's quite amusing. Rather like hearing the neighbors' son practicing on his piano - only you get to make some noise in return.

Yet another "collaborative" site that will vanish in the blink of an eye. Have fun, that's all that matters.

Missing your Pandora?

Those of us who don't reside in the US of A, were recently robbed of one of the best music sites on the net - Pandora. About a year ago, the owners of Pandora (an automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by The Music Genome Project) claimed that they cannot afford the payments they need to make for royalties, and closed the service to surfers outside of the USA.

There many ways to connect to Pandora from outside the US, but it's not very convenient, and people who are not very technology-oriented found those ways (proxies and such) to be extremely difficult.

There are also many sites who claim to offer you a personalized music experience, but none really matched the qualities of Pandora, in my humble opinion. Those include last.fm, deezer and MeeMix, which was a real disappointment. If you wanted free music online, you were left with choices like SeeqPod - which is cool, but hardly personalized - or FilterMusic - which is a list of internet radio stations, albeit a very good one.

To make a long story short - if you miss Pandora like I do, and can't connect directly, you will love GlobalPandora - a simple site that allows you to connect to Pandora from anywhere on the globe - and it's the real thing. I'm not sure how long this site is going to hold on, but hey - Enjoy it while it lasts!

Brent Spiner: The Days before Data

I am huge fan of Brent Spiner. I think he is one of the best actors out there, and I always get proof for that. His role as Data in Star Trek: TNG was brilliant, but he did many other things in the movies, the theater and as a singer, that prove - time and time again - that he has the gift of true talent.

This is why I was delighted to discover this funny little clip in YouTube, that shows Brent Spiner in Night Court, doing what he does best - making people laugh:

To the best of my knowledge, Brent is working on his second music album at the moment, which is supposed to come out real soon. His first CD, "Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back" is a wonderful creation, which caught me completely by surprise - who knew Brent could sing so well? It wasn't easy getting that CD, as it was out of print and only available at eBay and Amazon for outrageous prices, but it was worth every dollar. I hope that getting the new CD won't prove as difficult.

I just created a video channel with 13 of the worst songs ever made. By far. It wasn't an easy list to create, as there are scores of horrible songs out there. Still, I think I managed a pretty comprehensive collection. Enjoy (NOT):

Rock on, Eddie!

I was just thrilled to see this amazingly cool guitar solo, performed by Eddie Van Halen. Some days are just wonderful for Rock n' Roll.

Are we seeing the return of classic Rock? Led Zeppelin, The Police and Van Halen are reuniting, and Hip Hop sales are plummeting. Are we back to the old Drums-Base-Guitar combo? Does Guitar Hero have anything to do with this phenomenon?

Anyway, I have an extreme fondness for Van Halen, since "You Really Got Me" is the first and only song I have ever performed on stage, as a drummer. I remember this one-time show well, and it was a lot of fun to play this song. The crowd adored it, as well, and it made me understand how addictive and rewarding can a live music performance be. The adrenaline rush was incredible.

So, I have until December 3rd to save some money and get my ass off to KeyArena in Seattle. In the mean time, keep on rocking!

I just discovered this site: SeeqPod. You can search for music, and create an instant playlist. The results are very good and varied - I am listening to it right now and having a lot of fun.

SeeqPod Music beta - Playable Search

Ever since Pandora has closed its gates to non-US users, I have been looking for a cool music site to listen to while I'm working on the computer (which is most of the day, really). I have tried finetune and was bored quickly; Last.fm simply wasn't fun; and recently I ventured into MeeMix, which is supposed to guess your musical taste - but fails miserably.

SeeqPod isn't pretentious. It's simple, straight-forward and very fast. I typed in "Blackalicious" and got a myriad of songs that I love. Easy, quick and efficient - the way these things are supposed to be.

The "Discover" Button also allows for variation, and gives an opportunity to find music you don't know yet.

Cool site, I like it.
